The Weight of Expectations

The air within the Tower was heavier now, oppressive even. I could feel it pressing against my skin as I leaned against the cold stone wall, the rough texture grounding me in the reality of my situation. Fifty-two hours had passed since I first stepped into this place, and though fatigue gnawed at my bones, I was far from done. The tenth floor was behind me, its challenges already a fading memory, but the climb was far from over. If anything, it had just begun.

I took a deep breath, the hot air filling my lungs as I assessed my progress. Ten floors in just over two days—by most standards, that was impressive. But for me, it was barely scratching the surface of what I needed to achieve. The highest floor ever reached during the rookie assessment was the twentieth, and if I wanted to put Hatase Agency on the map, I had to push beyond that. I had to reach higher, dig deeper, and leave a mark that would make the world take notice.

Hatase Agency was nothing but a small, almost insignificant name in the vast sea of Ascendant agencies. But if a rookie like me could set a new record, if I could achieve what no one else had, it would change everything. New recruits would flock to us, driven by the promise of greatness, the allure of being trained by someone who had defied the odds. It was a lot of pressure, sure, but I was not about to shy away from that.

Speaking of Hatase, I sighed, my thoughts drifting to Dravenna. Progress with her had been slow, almost maddeningly so. Gaining her loyalty was like trying to catch smoke with bare hands—frustrating and elusive. She was a key part of my plan, but since that night I confessed and almost kissed her, she’d been keeping her distance over the past few weeks. It was troubling. Without her loyalty, without her being on my side, everything I’d been working towards could crumble. I needed her to see me as more than just an ally—I needed her to believe in me, to be willing to betray Colven for my sake. But that was easier said than done.

Another sigh escaped my lips as I turned my attention back to the present. The gate to the eleventh floor stood before me. I could feel the weight of the tower above pressing down, a reminder of how much farther I still had to go.

Steeling myself, I stepped through the gate leading to the 11th floor, and the familiar sight unfolded before me. The chamber was vast, its towering stone walls forming a perfect square, each corner disappearing into the shadows cast by the dim, volcanic lamps that lined the perimeter. The walls themselves were worn, and their surfaces were cracked and pitted, yet still imposing.

At the heart of the room, standing perfectly still as if it were part of the architecture itself, was the lone guardian of this floor—a colossal rock golem.
